Kuwait says Air Defences intercept missile, drone attacks

Kuwait’s air defence forces intercepted incoming missile and drone attacks on Monday, the Kuwaiti Army General Staff said, amid escalating tensions following US strikes on Iranian military targets over the weekend.

“Currently, Kuwaiti air defence systems are intercepting enemy missile and drone attacks. Any explosive sounds heard are the result of interception operations carried out by air defence systems,” the General Staff said in a statement, urging residents to follow safety guidelines.

The announcement came after the United States said it had struck Iranian radar and drone command-and-control facilities in Goruk and on Qeshm Island, citing self-defence and the protection of regional shipping lanes.

Kuwait, which hosts a major US military base, did not specify the origin of the attacks.

However, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its Aerospace Force had launched a retaliatory operation targeting a US base allegedly used in attacks against Iran’s Sirik Island in Hormozgan province.

In a statement, the IRGC said it had struck pre-designated targets linked to what it described as a US attack on a telecommunications tower on Sirik Island, claiming the operation destroyed its intended objectives.

The force warned that any further US military action would provoke a “completely different” response.

Moreover, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei defended Tehran’s actions, saying Iran had the right to carry out retaliatory strikes against regional bases and assets used to launch attacks on the country.

“States have an established legal obligation not to allow their territory or assets to be used for invading other countries,” Baghaei said in a post on X.

He also accused the European union of “selective moral outrage,” calling its criticism of Iran’s actions “hypocritical and reckless.”

The European union had earlier condemned reported Iranian attacks on Kuwait, arguing they violated the country’s sovereignty and posed a serious threat to regional security and stability.
