Kuwait temporarily suspended commercial flights on Wednesday following an Iranian drone attack on the country’s main international airport, which came just hours after the US and Iran exchanged missile strikes.
Kuwaiti Defence Ministry spokesman Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi said “a number of hostile drones” targeted the passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport.
According to the ministry, the strike caused significant damage to parts of the building and injured several people, though authorities did not immediately disclose the number or condition of those wounded.
The airport had only recently resumed normal operations on June 1 due to disruptions caused by the Iran war.
The latest incident followed a night of military exchanges across the region.
Late on Tuesday, the US military announced strikes against an Iranian military facility after missiles were launched towards Kuwait and Bahrain. According to CENTCOM, Iran had fired two missiles at Kuwait that fell apart enroute, while American and Bahraini forces jointly intercepted missiles aimed at Bahrain.
Additionally, CENTCOM also said it had “downed multiple drones” targeting American forces in Kuwait.
The IRGC said it had targeted the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters in Bahrain, and another regional target in a veiled reference to Kuwait.
According to the theocratic guard, it launched its attack in response to an American missile strike into the engine room of an oil tanker that was trying to reach Iran despite the US blockade, with CENTCOM saying it responded with strikes on an Iranian military ground control station on Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz.
