West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday raised the Tricolour and took the salute at a programme here marking the nation’s 76th Independence Day. as she promised on Twitter of striving every day to build the India of her dreams.
Participating in the day’s main function at the arterial Indira Gandhi Sarani (erstwhile Red Road), Banerjee matched steps with tribal dancers by coming down from the stage.
Petals were showered from the helicopter, and school children took part in a cultural display during the colourful programme.
The city and state police, and various other departments of the government took part in a parade, where a tableau of the Dura puja became the cynosure of eyes. The chief minister’s voice reciting hymns was heard when the tableau passed by.
Taking to her Twitter handle, Banerjee said she dreamt of an India where no one would go hungry, and no women would feel unsafe.
“I have a dream for India! For the people, I want to build a nation where no one goes hungry, where no woman feels unsafe, where every child sees the light of education, where all are treated equally, where no oppressive forces divide the people and harmony defines the day, ” Banerjee said.
” It is my promise to the people of this great nation that I shall strive everyday for our dream India, ” she stated.
She asked fellow Indians about their dream for India and invited all to share ideas about their connect with the nation.
Banerjee iterated that India must awaken to the real essence of Independence.
“
On the completion of 75 years of Independence, India must awaken to the real essence of Independence, ” Banerjee said.
“We must stay true to the vision of our forefathers and keep the aspirations of our future generations at heart, ” she added.
“75 years of Independence! Today, we pay homage to the supreme sacrifices of our forefathers that led to our country’s independence, ” the Chief Minister averred and urged the people to preserve their sacred legacy and uphold the dignity of the nation’s democratic values and people’s rights.
She conveyed her heartfelt greetings to all fellow citizens.
Earlier, Banerjee called for unitedly reinforcing “OUR CONNECTION” to the motherland and pledging to protect it.
She described India as a country where people of varied cultures and religions peacefully coexist, and where diversity thrives despite differences.
Banerjee said, ” WE, the people of INDIA. OUR cultures, traditions, languages, attires, and customs vary. Yet, WE are ONE. “
“OUR love for the nation binds us. OUR sacred CONNECTION to India unites us, ” she added.
“As we gear up to celebrate India’s 75 years of independence, let us unitedly reinforce OUR CONNECTION to the motherland and pledge to protect it, ” she stated.
“INDIA… Where democratic values and people’s rights are UPHELD. Yes, this is our INDIA! ” she added.
Banerjee said while India means unity, its ideas vary.
“Aren’t we all the proud people of this beautifully diverse land? For us, INDIA means UNITY. But, our ideas vary, ” Banerjee iterated.
