New Delhi, May 9 (UNI) South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Mayor Mukkesh Suryaan asked the civic authority to lodge an FIR against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Amanatullah Khan and Municipal Councillor Abdul Wajid Khan for allegedly obstructing the agency’s work at Shaheen Bagh.
Earlier in the day, AAP MLA and the councillor protested against the civic body for carrying out a demolition drive in the Shaheen Bagh area.
Bulldozers reached South Delhi’s Shaheen Bagh area on Monday morning as the SDMC pushed ahead with its ‘anti-encroachment’ drive in the locality that became the epicentre of the nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in 2019-2020.
Locals also came out to stop the demolition drive. Area MLA Amanatullah Khan even sat in front of the bulldozer along with a few other political leaders to cease the drive.
However, following the ‘dharna’ and sloganeering by residents and activists from the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, the SDMC officials part of the demolition drive returned with bulldozers without conducting the exercise.
Residents and AAP MLA alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is using the civic bodies against the minority community in the shroud of anti-encroachment drive for political benefit.
Khan claimed that there was no illegal structure in the locality as he made them removed from the area a while ago.
However, amid heavy police deployment, the SDMC officials razed a temporary structure which they called illegal.
Only a scaffolding, a structure set up during construction activity, was razed outside a residential building in today’s demolition drive. It was set up to renovate the building, according to the locals.
