Mehbooba opposes allotment of orchard land to BSF in Pulwama

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday objected to the proposed allotment of land in Pulwama district to the Border Security Force (BSF), stating that security camps should not be established in the middle of inhabited villages.

Urging Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene, Mehbooba said the land identified for the proposed camp in Puchal village is home to apple and almond orchards, and also serves as a safe zone for residents during floods.

“In such a situation, handing over such fertile land to the BSF, right in the middle of the village, is not appropriate. Security forces should not be stationed within villages,” Mehbooba told reporters after visiting the area.

She said the land has been in possession of local residents for over a century and supports livelihoods dependent on horticulture, particularly at a time when unemployment is rising.

Referring to a Bill recently introduced by her party to protect such land, Mehbooba said it was unfortunate that the Chief Minister had termed it a move to protect “land grabbers.”

“I do not think Kashmiris or people of Jammu are land thieves. This land is their right. With the population increasing, where will people go?” she said, reiterating her appeal to the Chief Minister to intervene.

While acknowledging the need to provide land to security forces, Mehbooba said camps should be set up on barren land rather than productive orchards.

She added that she would also raise the issue with the Defence Minister but stressed that safeguarding the rights of the people and protecting their land ultimately falls under the responsibility of the Chief Minister.

“I will also try to raise the matter with the Defence Minister. However, this is Omar sahib’s responsibility as the Chief Minister. It is his duty to safeguard the rights of the people and protect their land and livelihoods,” she said.
