The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Monday issued notice to Delhi government over the reported stopping of supply of food to a shelter home being run by it in Nizamuddin area here.
Reportedly, the inmates have been starving as the supply of food by the government has been stopped.Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report on the plight of the inmates of the Delhi government shelter home, the Rights body has issued a notice to Delhi Chief Secretary, calling for a detailed report in the matter within one week.
The Commission has observed the contents of a media report, if true, amount to a serious issue of violation of human rights of the helpless inmates and a matter of concern.
The Rights body said it is the duty of the state to ensure no one is left without food in the shelter home. The Commission has also asked its Director General (Investigation) to depute a team headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police to conduct an on-the-spot fact-finding investigation in the matter and submit a report to it.
According to the media report, carried on April 28 , there are about 500 people living in the shelter home. Some inmates stay with their young children and cannot arrange a square meal for them. Looking at the deteriorating condition of the poor inmates, including the sick and elderly, the caretaker of the shelter homes are trying to feed them from their own pocket.
The Delhi government is yet to issue any official statement on the issue.
