Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif declared open the 34th National Games in the southwestern provincial capital of Quetta on Monday, vowing to promote sports to revive the country’s national spirit.
The prime minister assured that the central government would provide all possible resources for promoting sports and create conducive opportunities for the youth to excel in all types of games at home and abroad.
“Our nation is proud of its players and athletes who have not only earned fame in the country but also brought awards from abroad,” said the prime minister.
The prime minister added that holding the national games in the historic city of Quetta manifests national unity and strength, and patriotism for the motherland.
According to the organizers of the games, over 6,000 athletes from across the country are competing in phases at the Ayub Stadium and Bugti Stadium of Quetta.
The organizers said the competitions in around a dozen disciplines had already started before the opening ceremony to cope with logistics and accommodation issues.
