PDP protests against Omar Abdullah government over power amnesty, financial year-end recoveries

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Saturday staged a protest against the Omar Abdullah government, accusing it of failing to provide relief under the power amnesty scheme and subjecting the public to alleged harassment through aggressive tax and utility recoveries ahead of the financial year-end.

The partly leader and workers shouted slogans against the J&K government. The protesters later dispersed peacefully.

Speaking to reporters after the protest party leader Iqbal Trumboo accused the government of harassing people through tax and utility recoveries ahead of the March 31 financial year closing, saying the administration had failed to address unemployment and public welfare.

He alleged that electricity connections were being snapped, municipal taxes were being forcibly collected and old water bills were being issued to the public in the name of the March closing.

PDP leader said government employees were facing salary issues while common people were being pressured to clear dues, calling it “oppression in the name of March 31”.

The PDP leader said people were not refusing to pay electricity or water charges but were only seeking more time due to financial difficulties. He also demanded an extension in the power amnesty scheme, claiming the party had been requesting the government for the past three months.

Trumboo criticised the government’s infrastructure priorities, alleging that projects like the proposed Rs 144 crore flyover would benefit officials and politicians rather than address unemployment and public issues.

He warned the government led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to fulfil its promises and provide relief to the people instead of increasing their financial burden.
