PM Modi hails Northeast’s role in nation-building

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm greetings to the people of Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura on their Statehood Day, praising the three northeastern states for their cultural richness, natural beauty and growing contribution to India’s development, while expressing hope that they would continue to scale new heights in the years ahead.

In a series of messages posted on X, PM Modi highlighted the unique strengths of each state and underlined the broader role of the Northeast in India’s growth story. Noting that the three states were marking their Statehood Day on the same occasion, the Prime Minister said he wished success and progress for all their citizens.

“I convey my heartfelt greetings to the people of Meghalaya on their Statehood Day. The people of Meghalaya have made strong contributions to the development of our nation,” PM Modi said. He added that the state’s “cultural vibrancy and scenic beauty are widely admired,” and expressed hope that Meghalaya would “keep scaling new heights of development in the future.”

Extending his greetings to Manipur, the Prime Minister said, “On the occasion of Manipur Statehood Day, I extend my warm greetings to my sisters and brothers of the state. People from Manipur are enriching the progress of India.” He singled out the state’s achievements and identity, noting that Manipur’s “passion towards sports, culture and nature is noteworthy,” and wished that it would continue to move forward on the path of development.

In his message to Tripura, PM Modi said the state’s journey reflected “a remarkable blend of tradition and modernity.” “The state has witnessed pioneering transformations in diverse fields and its people are adding momentum to India’s growth trajectory,” he said, adding, “I pray that Tripura prospers significantly in the coming times.”

Summing up his greetings in a separate post, the Prime Minister said, “Today, three states of the North East—Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura—are celebrating their Statehood Day. On this occasion, my heartiest congratulations to all my brothers and sisters here.” He added that his “sincerest wish” was that the people of the three states achieve success in every field “through their own efforts.”

Manipur, Meghalaya and Tripura attained statehood on January 21, 1972, under the North Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971, as part of a major administrative reorganisation aimed at giving greater political autonomy to the region. Over the decades, the three states have developed distinct identities shaped by their indigenous cultures, languages and histories, while also playing an increasingly visible role in national life.

The Prime Minister’s messages come amid the Centre’s continued emphasis on the development of the Northeast, often described by the government as “Ashta Lakshmi,” or the eight forms of prosperity. In recent years, the region has seen increased focus on infrastructure, connectivity, tourism, sports and cultural promotion, alongside efforts to integrate it more closely with the national and regional economy.

Statehood Day celebrations in the three states typically include official functions, cultural programmes and public events highlighting local traditions and achievements, even as leaders reiterate aspirations for peace, stability and inclusive development in the strategically important region.
