Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Assam on Saturday, where he will witness an aerial display at the Northeast’s first Emergency Landing Facility and inaugurate multiple infrastructure projects worth over Rs 5,450 crore.
The visit reflects the government’s focus on enhancing connectivity, strengthening digital infrastructure, promoting education, and advancing sustainable urban transport across the North-Eastern Region.
The Prime Minister will land at around 10:30 am at the Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) on the Moran Bypass in Dibrugarh, where he will witness a display of fighter jets, transport aircraft, and helicopters. The ELF, the first of its kind in the Northeast, has been developed in coordination with the Indian Air Force to support the landing and take-off of both military and civil aircraft during emergencies.
Described as a critical regional asset, the dual-use facility enables rapid deployment of rescue and relief operations during natural disasters or strategic requirements. It can accommodate fighter aircraft up to 40 tonnes and transport aircraft up to 74 tonnes maximum take-off weight.
At around 1 pm, the Prime Minister will visit the Kumar Bhaskar Varma Setu across the Brahmaputra, constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 3,030 crore. This six-lane extradosed prestressed concrete bridge, the first extradosed bridge in the Northeast, connects Guwahati with North Guwahati, reducing travel time to about seven minutes.
Considering the region’s high seismic activity, the bridge features base isolation technology with friction pendulum bearings, high-performance stay cables for durability, and a Bridge Health Monitoring System for real-time structural monitoring and early damage detection.
At around 1:30 pm, the Prime Minister will inaugurate and flag off various projects at Lachit Ghat in Guwahati, including the National Data Centre for the North Eastern Region at Amingaon in Kamrup district.
This state-of-the-art data centre, with a sanctioned load of 8.5 MW and average rack capacity of 10 kW per rack, will host mission-critical applications for government departments and serve as a disaster recovery centre for other national data centres. Aligned with the Digital India vision, the centre aims to strengthen the ICT backbone of the Northeast and ensure secure, reliable, and always-available digital infrastructure for citizen-centric services.
The Prime Minister will also inaugurate the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Guwahati, which is expected to boost higher and management education in the region.
During the visit, the Prime Minister will flag off 225 electric buses under the PM-eBus Sewa Scheme across four cities: Guwahati (100 buses), Nagpur (50), Bhavnagar (50), and Chandigarh (25). The rollout of e-bus operations is expected to benefit over 50 lakh citizens, providing clean, affordable, and reliable public transport while improving urban mobility and quality of life.
