Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday extended greetings on World Environment Day and called for renewed commitment towards environmental protection and sustainable development, while highlighting India’s progress in expanding green cover and conserving wildlife over the past decade.
In a post on social media platform X, Modi said, “Best wishes to everyone on World Environment Day. I would like to applaud all those passionate about environmental conservation. This is a day to reaffirm our commitment to protecting our environment and furthering growth that is sustainable.”
The prime minister said the centre’s initiatives over the last ten years reflect its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development. “Numerous efforts by our government over the last decade highlight our work in this direction. Some of India’s key successes include expanding green cover and a rise in the population of several animals,” he said.
Emphasising the role of public participation in environmental protection, Modi credited citizens for contributing to positive ecological outcomes through collective action and innovation. “The people of India have shown how collective efforts, policies, belief in science and innovation can improve our environment,” he added.
World Environment Day, observed annually on June 5, is the United Nations’ principal platform for encouraging awareness and action on environmental issues. India has in recent years placed increasing emphasis on climate action, renewable energy expansion, afforestation programmes and wildlife conservation as part of its broader sustainable development agenda.
The Prime Minister’s message comes amid growing global focus on tackling climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation, with governments and communities worldwide being urged to adopt more sustainable practices to safeguard the planet for future generations.
