Colombo, April 19 (UNI) The Sri Lankan police on Tuesday imposed curfew in Rambukkana police division after one person was killed in police firing.
Colombo Page quoted police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa as saying that a police curfew has been imposed in the Rambukkana police area until further notice and law will be strictly enforced against those who violate the curfew.
For past several weeks, anti-government protests have taken place in several parts of the island nation.
However, this was the first time that one protester was killed and at least 27 people were injured by the police.
Earlier, the police had said that that the protesters in Rambukkana had attempted to set fire to a fuel bowser.
People had blocked the railway tracks near the Rambukkana railway crossing for over 8 hours over fuel price hike.
As the police fired tear gas at the protesters to clear the tracks, clashes erupted.
Colombo Page quoted Kegalle Hospital director Mihiri Priyangani as saying that while one of the injured succumbed, the condition of two of the other nine injured persons was serious.
As several videos of the clash continue to get viral on social media, the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has appointed a three member team to investigate into the clashes, NewsWire reported.
