Protests erupt against detention in Old City

Srinagar: Residents of Gurpoora Khushki Rainawari staged the protests and blocked the main Saidakadal road against the arrest of Mohammad Siddiq Bhat by the polcie.  Protestors blamed that Siddiq was asked to visit the police station Rainawari from where he was taken to the court and then shifted to central jail. 

According to locals, Mohammad Siddiq father of 7 children and a business man by profession was not building any of the constructions against the orders of the LAWDA,  (Lakes and Water Works Development Authority),” a local shafiq Ahmad said .protests saidakadalPic by Xuhaib Hamzah

After raising slogans against police and the LAWDA department protestors took over the streets and blocked the main road at Saida Kadal, Rainawari and demanded his immediate release. The proetstsers haletd the traffic movfemnt casuing chaos and massive traffic jams much to the inconvenience of people. 

“I don’t even know the reason of my father’s detention by the authorities as he was at home and preparing for his daily routine work. Suddenly he got a phone call from the concern police station from where he was taken to central jail,” Siddiq’s son Feroz told The Legitimate.  Meanwhile, the SHO Rainawari, Syed Mubarak told The Legitimate that Siddiq was detained after LAWDA approached them for his attempt to raise the structure in green belt zone against High Court orders.

 “We booked him under RPC 188 and presented in Court. He was sent to Central jail on court directions,” he said, adding that the issue is between court and people now and police discharged its duties.
