Sarpanch arrested for killing wife with VDC weapon

Jammu and Kashmir Police in Rajouri on Thursday said to have arrested a Sarpanch for allegedly killing his wife with a .303 Village Defence Committee (VDC) weapon.

The incident, police said, took place in the intervening night of Wednesday-Thursday in Patrara village of Sunderbani tehsil in the district.

In an official statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Rajouri police informed that in the intervening night, an information was received at Sunderbani Police Station that one person namely Yashpal, son of Tirth Ram of Patrara, who is also Sarpanch of Panchayat Halka Patrara, fired upon his wife with VDC .303 rifle, resulting in grievous injuries to his 46-year-old wife namely Neelam Devi.

The injured woman was shifted to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Sunderbani by her other family members, said police. “Later the injured was referred to GMC Jammu for further treatment.” police said in its official statement.

Police said that the victim succumbed to her injuries while receiving the treatment at GMC Jammu following which her body has been taken into possession by police.

Rajouri police said that in this regard, a case under FIR number 63/2023 under section 307/323 IPC and 30 Indian Arms Act was initially registered in Police Station Sunderbani with section of 302 IPC amounting to murder has also been added in the case now.

Police team rushed to the spot and collected all the relevant evidence and arrested the accused Sarpanch Yashpal from Patrara, police in Rajouri district said, adding that the weapon of offence has also been recovered.

The body of deceased has been handed over to her legal heirs after completing all the legal formalities, police said
