Temples, monasteries exempted from tax in Ayodhya

Ayodhya (UP), May 12 (UNI) Ayodhya Municipal Corporation has passed a proposal to exempt monasteries and temples from tax.

Mayor Rishikesh Upadhyay on Thursday said that during a meeting of the Municipal Corporation board a proposal to exempt monasteries and temples from tax has been passed. “Now the monasteries and temples will be required to give only token money as tax. In addition to this the pending dues of the temples,” he said.
Upadhyay however clarified that only those monasteries, temples and ashrams will be exempted from tax which are not being used commercially. “The corporation gets around Rs 2.50 crore as tax from Ayodhya zone, which has around 8,000 temples, monasteries and ashrams, which is around 95 per cent,” he said.
He said that to rid the city from waterlogging it has been decided to construct drains with a cost of Rs 182 crore. “The date of depositing tax with 10 per cent rebate has been increased till July 31,” he said.
