Unfair Selections

When the Union government revoked provisions of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, it promised a change for the better. It assured justice to all, clean and honest administration to serve the people at their doorstep. Following the abrogation, all the top and major positions in civil secretariat and in districts were filled with a chosen lot of officers by the BJP led government which is directly controlling the region after bifurcating erstwhile state into two Union Territories including Ladakh and Jammu Kashmir.

Last week in twin cities of Srinagar and Jammu, massive protests on roads were reported by aspirants of Financial Accounts Assistants. They are still protesting and threatening to intensify the protests, if their demands are not met. Hundreds of aspirants demand the immediate release of the selection list of the candidates who had recently appeared in the FAA exams.

“We will halt the day to day activities after appearing on roads with massive protests. The government is ignoring our genuine demand for which we have been protesting for many days,” said one of the aspirants at Srinagar who is also on protest.

His demand is backed by another youth from Jammu.

“We are left here on the roads. No one from the government has come to us and heard our grievances,” said the protesting candidate,” But we will not give up and fight till we get justice.

In this scorching heat, hundreds of aspirants including male and female are on roads and have camped in Jammu and Srinagar against the JKSSB for withholding the results.

The government, a few days ago simply ignored the protests with a tweet from DIPR. It reads: “Attention: Selection list of Finance Accounts Assistant is also being inquired by a committee headed by ACS Home. Action will be taken based on the report of inquiry. If no irregularities are found, the process will be taken up further. If irregularities are found, strict action will follow”.

This is not the first recruitment process which has come under questioning in the last three years.

A recruitment list in Jammu and Kashmir Bank which has the entire governing body changed was scrapped. 1200 Banking Associates 120 Probationary Officers were sent back home after some quarters alleged that the recruitment was not done in an honest and transparent manner. People appreciated the move and hoped that the new scheme of things by the Manoj Sinha administration will provide a sigh of relief to the people.

But it proves a farce. There have been three major recruitment drives during the time of the prevailing regime. All of them are under massive criticism and recently one of the selection lists was scrapped when just twenty families’ from Jammu’s one district seemed to be the only beneficiaries.

Under duress, the Manoj Sinha administration said in an official function that the selection list of Jammu Kashmir Police Sub Inspectors has been scrapped and the probe will be conducted. He ordered the authorities to begin with the fresh process of recruitment to ensure no irregularities take place.

Prior to the JKPSI list, the aspirants of Fire and Emergency services have been demanding the probe in the selection list. They hit the roads for many weeks and still demand an impartial probe into it. According to them there are massive irregularities in the selection process and those who couldn’t even qualify the first round were seen in the final list.

But no one heard them and they continued to cry.

Similarly, now the FAA recruitment list is under scrutiny before it was made public.

The people are asking Manoj Sinha administration what has changed after Article 370 abrogation. There have been questions about the poor transparency in the past and it still continues.

“The Manoj Sinha administration scrapped the recruitment process of JK Bank in 2020 on the grounds that it was not done in a transparent manner. Now under his own nose, three recruitments have raised significant questions from aspirants about the selection process. What is the difference between the previous regimes and the prevailing regime,” ask Mushtaq Ahmad, A political analyst.

Ahmad said that New Delhi needs to work to ensure it fulfills its promises of providing efficient and transparent governance to the people. Otherwise, mere propaganda won’t work.

He says in the coming elections, if the governing model is not improved and those involved in irregularities are taken to the task, the BJP will face tough times in its bastion- Jammu.
