American bases in Iraq and Syria came under drone attacks launched by Iran-backed militias, operating under the umbrella of the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, in what appears to be retaliation for the ongoing US-Israeli operations against Iran and other regional conflicts in West Asia.
According to Iraqi media, the Harir Airbase in Iraq’s semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region was struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle in the early hours of Tuesday.
Authorities have not yet released details on casualties or the extent of damage. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, however, announced that it had carried out at least 11 strikes against US military positions in Iraq and across the region over the past 24 hours, employing kamikaze drones.
In a related incident, a fighter from the former paramilitary coalition Hashed al-Shaabi, also known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, was killed near the Iraq-Syria border. The coalition attributed the strike to US and Israeli forces, according to Asharq Al-Awsat.
“At 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) this morning, the 45th Brigade was subjected to a treacherous Zionist-American aggression in the Qaim district of Anbar province,” Asharq Al-Awsat quoted the coalition as saying.
