US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff on way to Switzerland for talks with Iran

US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff is heading to Switzerland, where the first round of the US-Iran talks on a potential nuclear deal is expected to be held, Axios reported, citing an unnamed US official.

US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner is already in Switzerland, the official said.

The report said it is unclear yet whether a new time for the negotiations has been scheduled. The talks were expected to start Friday but were put off due to the fighting between Israel and Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah in Lebanon.

It said the US delegation was expected to be led by US Vice President JD Vance, but he postponed his trip Thursday, and it is not clear whether he will go there this weekend.

On June 14, Iran and the United States confirmed that work on a memorandum of understanding had been completed. Overnight into June 18, the two countries remotely signed the document that provides for an end to the military conflict that began on February 28.

The memorandum gives the two countries 60 days to negotiate a final deal on the Iranian nuclear issue and US sanctions. Additionally, it sets a timeline for the United States to lift its naval blockade, and for Iran to restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
