New Delhi: Vice President M V Venkaiah Naidu said the New Education Policy is set to revolutionize the educational landscape of the country by making teaching and learning holistic in true senses.
“It is a farsighted document which is focused on interdisciplinary learning, research, and knowledge generation, and most importantly imparting education in mother tongue” vice-president Naidu, who is also the chancellor of the university said, while speaking at the inaugural ceremony for centenary celebration of Delhi University here.
He said we must build upon our strengths today to make our universities stand out as institutions of excellence- Excellence in teaching and learning, Excellence in research and innovation.
“Education is the most powerful catalyst for national development. Higher education, if it is of a high quality, can change the development trajectory of a country” he added. Naidu also called upon the students and University facility to promote local language in the education system so that more and more people will educate for the benefit of the country.
Rising concerns over the ranking of Indian universities in the world, the Vice President said we should work towards finding a place in the top 10 universities in the world and I hope that the Delhi University will work to achieve it.
During the function, the Vice President released a Commemorative Centenary Stamp, Commemorative Centenary Coin, Commemorative Centenary volume and the Delhi University Undergraduate Curriculum Framework-2022 in New Delhi today.
“Delhi University has had an important role in the country’s independence movement & many distinguished alumni who have graduated from this University have occupied very important positions in various fields & have contributed to the development of our country after independence” he said.
Speaking during the event, educational Minister Dharmender Pradhan said “I congratulate Delhi University which is implementing the new education policy with full spirit.
“I am confident that Delhi Universitywill play a leading role in churning out global citizens, establishing India as a knowledge-based society and in creating a benchmark model for emerging economies” he said.
The Minister also called upon the faculties of the University actively participating in development of the National Curriculum Framework.“
The academic group at university must actively contribute for formulation of a dynamic, progressive, modern and culturally-rooted curriculum framework” he said.
The Minister asked Delhi University to take a ‘Sankalp’ to go paperless. “In the next 100 days, DU should aspire to offer viable solutions to India’s top-100 problems as well as solutions for mitigating global challenges, like climate change”.
In its 100 years journey, DU has inspired and has also provided leadership to the country. I am confident that in the days ahead the university will establish itself as an incubator of the world in offering solutions to global problems,” he added.
Highlighting the successful hundred years of University, vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh, said the Delhi University, in terms of Center University, we are the highest citation , highest in number of international collaborative research papers and first in terms of research output from central university. He said the university planned to build two new hostels within two years with 800-1000 bed capacity each to cater to the needs of outstation students.
He said a new building for the Faculty of Technology, as well new Academic andAdministrative Blocks, will also come up. “The next 25 years are very crucial for the university and we must work together to take this university to the next level” he added. Delhi University was Established in May1, 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential University by the Ace of the then Central Legislative Assembly, a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, research and social outreach has made the University a role-model and trend setter for other universities.
The President of India is the Visitor,the Vice-President is the Chancellor and the Chief Justice of the Supreme Courtof India is the Pro-Chancellor of the University.
Beginning with three colleges and 750 students, it has grown as one of the largest universities in India with 16faculties, over 80 academic departments, an equal number of colleges and over seven lakh students.
Over 500 programmes offered by theUniversity are approved by Academic and Executive Councils, out of which 209 programmes are being considered for NAAC accreditation purposes.
