Srinagar: While the whole world was observing World Disability Day on Thursday, police in Srinagar detained scores of disabled persons who were protesting against the state government for failing to provide satisfactory benefits to them.
The protesters who were protesting under the banner of All Jammu and Kashmir disabled Association (AJKDA) tried to march towards city Centre Lal chowk.
Nonetheless, police swung into action and detained scores of its members. According to KNS correspondent, the protesters who assembled at Srinagar’s press enclave were holding banners and chanting slogans like ‘we want justice’.
They were demanding reservation quota, legal aids and granting of ration cards to handicapped personnel.
Earlier talking to media, the senior member of the association said that every successive regime has failed to provide benefits to the handicapped persons as they hardly bother to look into the issue.
“The authorities seem reluctant to provide benefits to us, which has been announced for us. We are demanding whatever they promised to us and the same should be given to us at earliest,” he said.
They said that they are facing tough time due to ‘deplorable’ behavior of the state authorities. “We appeal state authorities to look into the matter and redress their genuine grievances at earliest,” they said.
Meanwhile, police bundled many protesters with movement disability into police van and whisked them away from the spot. (KNS)
