Zohran Mamdani invokes Nehru in victory speech after historic New York Mayoral win

The victory that has reshaped New York’s political landscape, Zohran Mamdani invoked the words of India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, as he declared victory in the city’s 2025 mayoral election, proclaiming that his campaign had “toppled a political dynasty.”

Addressing an elated crowd , Mamdani said, “Friends, we have toppled a political dynasty. I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life, but let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on a politics that abandons the many and answers only to the few.”

Recalling Nehru’s words from India’s tryst with destiny, Mamdani said New York had “stepped out from the old into the new,” framing his victory as the dawn of a new era in city politics.

He also quoted India’s first Prime Minister, Jawahar Lal Nehru’s ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech, in his victory address.

“A moment comes rarely in history when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance,” he said.

After defeating Andrew Cuomo in the New York mayoral race, he thanked New Yorkers for electing him as the first Indian-American Muslim and youngest mayor in the city’s history.

Zohran Mamdani’s victory marks a major shift toward progressive politics within the Democratic Party, The Hill reported. At 34, Mamdani, a democratic socialist, will become both the first millennial and the first Muslim to lead New York City.

“Thank you to the new generation of New York. We’ll fight for you because we are you. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty,” Mamdani said.

Declaring his victory, he said, “On January 1, I will be sworn in as mayor of New York City.”

In a speech lasting under 30 minutes, Mamdani addressed US President Donald Trump: “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.” He added, “To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us… If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him. I will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.”

Trump responded on Truth Social with a brief, dramatic message: “…and so it begins!”

“New York will remain a city of immigrants. A city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants and, as of tonight, led by an immigrant. We’ll love everyone, whether you are an immigrant or not,” he said.

Mamdani, is the son of Ugandan scholar Mahmood Mamdani and acclaimed Indian filmmaker Mira Nair.

He further said his electoral victory tonight is for all New Yorkers — from taxi drivers to line cooks. He also told a story about how he went on a 15-day hunger strike outside of City Hall with a taxi driver named Richard.

Mamdani’s campaign centered on affordability and economic justice. He pledged to freeze rents, establish city-owned grocery stores, provide free bus service, and expand access to affordable childcare.

One of the most contentious moments in the race came over Mamdani’s stance on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Critics accused him of not forcefully denouncing the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which pro-Israel advocates argue incites violence, while supporters view it as a call for Palestinian liberation.

Mamdani’s win has energized the Democratic left and raised new questions about the party’s direction — and whether he can deliver on his sweeping promises while navigating a divided political landscape and a second Trump administration in Washington, as cited by The Hill.
