In a landmark medical achievement, two infants-aged seven and eight months-were successfully treated for renal calculi at Government Medical College (GMC) Srinagar using a groundbreaking procedure.

The Department of Urology and the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care at the Super Specialty Hospital, GMC Srinagar, collaborated to perform Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL) on the young patients.

“This groundbreaking procedure marks the first time such young patients have undergone ESWL for 10mm and 12mm renal stones at our institution,” the spokesman for GMC Srinagar said.

He said the infants, diagnosed with significant 10mm and 12mm renal calculi, were at risk of severe complications that could have impacted their kidney function and overall health.

“Traditional surgical approaches posed considerable risks due to the patients’ age and size. However, the multidisciplinary team of experts opted for the minimally invasive ESWL procedure. This technique uses high-energy shock waves to break the kidney stones into smaller, passable fragments,” he added.
Prof. Syed Sajjad Nazir, Head of the Department of Urology, led the urology team in this delicate procedure.

“This successful treatment underscores our commitment to providing cutting-edge, patient-centered care. The ESWL procedure offers a safer alternative to conventional surgery, particularly for our youngest and most vulnerable patients. We are proud to have achieved such a milestone in pediatric urological care,” Nazir added

The Head of the Department of Anesthesiology, Prof. Hina Bashir, noted the unique challenges of administering anesthesia to such young patients.

She emphasized that the team’s expertise and meticulous planning were crucial to the successful outcome.

The infants were discharged after one day, a testament to the procedure’s minimally invasive nature and the team’s efficiency.

Prof. Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal of GMC Srinagar, hailed the achievement as a remarkable advancement for the institution and for pediatric healthcare in the region.
