2 JeM militants killed in Kulgam encounter

Security forces gunned down two Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militants in an encounter in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday evening, police said.

The gunfight broke out at Ahwatoo area of Kulgam when the joint teams of forces launched a cordon and a search operation (CASO) following an input about the militant presence.

“As the joint team of security forces reached a particular spot, the hiding militants opened fire and the force personnel retaliated, triggering the encounter,’ a police officer said.

He said during the initial exchange of fire, one militant was killed. He added that another militant was also killed tonight, taking the toll to two.

“Both the militants are local and affiliated with the proscribed terror outfit JeM and involved in several terror crimes,’ Additional Director General of Police Kashmir (ADGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.

‘The two killed militants are categorised JeM terrorists have been identified as Mohammad Shafi Ganie of Batpora, Kulgam & Mohammad Asif Wani alias Yawar of Takia Gopalpora, Kulgam. 2 AK 47 rifles and ammunition recovered,’ ADGP Kumar said in a tweet.

This was the second encounter that erupted in the district during the past 24 hours. On Monday, a Pakistani militant, identified as Abu Hurarah of Jaish-e-Mohammad, was killed and three people, including two civilians, were injured during an anti-militancy operation in Batpora area of Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.
