Srinagar: Domestic violence cases are on rise in the state as from past five years police have booked 4,157 persons for indulging in crime against women. The Government informed the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that from past five years 2009 cases of domestic violence have been registered.

    In a written reply to a question raised by woman legislator Anjum Fazili, the Minister for Social Welfare Bali Bhagat said that in order to curb the menace of domestic violence, the government has already enacted a Law namely the Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2010 and Jammu and Kashmir Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Rules 2011 thereto.

     The Minister according to CNS said that under the provision of the said Act, 2009 number of cases have been registered and 4157 persons have been booked during the last five years. He said that the J&K State Commission for Women has been charged with functions in terms of J&K State Commission for Women Act, 1999 and the Commission investigates and examines all matters relating to the safeguards provided for under the Constitution and other law.
