Former Baramulla District Development Council (DDC) chairperson Safina Baig, wife of former deputy chief minister Muzaffar Baig, on Wednesday joined the ruling National Conference (NC).
Safina joined the party in the presence of NC president Farooq Abdullah, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and several senior party leaders.
Her induction comes days after she attended an NC meeting in Baramulla, where her relative and the party’s MLA Javeed Baig were also present, fuelling speculation about her formal entry into the party.
A lawyer by profession, Safina, had won the 2020 DDC elections from Baramulla as an independent candidate before becoming the district’s first DDC chairperson with the support of the People’s Conference and the Apni Party.
She and her husband, Muzaffar Baig, were later briefly associated with the People’s Conference led by Sajad Lone and had supported the party’s Lok Sabha campaign. However, the couple subsequently distanced themselves from the party.
