Egypt produced a superb second-half comeback to defeat New Zealand 3-1 and secure the nation’s first-ever FIFA World Cup victory at BC Place here on Monday IST, boosting their hopes of reaching the knockout stage.

The Pharaohs recovered from an early setback after Finn Surman had given New Zealand the lead in the 15th minute, with goals from Mostafa Zico, captain Mohamed Salah and substitute Trézéguet turning the contest around in impressive fashion.

New Zealand made the brighter start and stunned the African side when Surman rose highest to score and hand the All Whites a deserved lead. Egypt struggled to find rhythm during much of the opening half as New Zealand defended resolutely and carried their advantage into the interval.

The momentum shifted dramatically after the break. Egypt increased the tempo and eventually found the breakthrough in the 58th minute when Mostafa Zico brought his side level. The equaliser injected confidence into the Pharaohs, who began to dominate possession and push New Zealand deeper into their own half.

Their pressure paid off again nine minutes later. Mohamed Salah, Egypt’s talisman and most influential player, produced a clinical finish in the 67th minute to complete the turnaround and put his side ahead for the first time in the match.

With New Zealand forced to chase the game, spaces began to open up. Egypt continued to threaten on the counterattack, while Salah orchestrated proceedings in the final third with his trademark creativity and movement.

The decisive moment arrived in the 82nd minute. Salah delivered a dangerous outswinging corner and Trézéguet, who had only recently entered the match, timed his run perfectly before diving to head the ball into the net, extending Egypt’s lead to 3-1 and effectively ending New Zealand’s resistance.

Salah finished with a goal and an assist, while Zico also enjoyed a memorable evening, contributing both a goal and an assist. Their performances proved central to Egypt’s historic triumph.

New Zealand continued to battle until the final whistle and nearly conceded a fourth goal in stoppage time.

Goalkeeper Max Crocombe made an outstanding goal-line block after racing back into position to deny Egypt substitute Zizo from close range.

The match also saw a late injury concern for Egypt when defender Hassan Abdelmaguid, introduced as a substitute in the closing stages, suffered a blow to the head and was forced off during added time.

According to match statistics, Egypt became only the second African nation since 1966 to score two headed goals in a single FIFA World Cup match. More importantly, the victory ended a long wait for a World Cup success, coming at Egypt’s ninth attempt in the tournament.

The result leaves Egypt in a strong position at the top of the group heading into the final round of fixtures, while New Zealand face a tougher path to qualification after suffering their first defeat of the campaign.
