Iranian parliament speaker says Strait of Hormuz to be reopened only on Iran’s terms

Date:

Following the US strikes on Iran, Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz will only be reopened on Iran’s terms, not through US threats.

“The US still hasn’t learned that bullying and breaking its commitments no longer come without a cost. Let me be clear: If you strike, you will be struck back. Don’t struggle in vain. You will only sink deeper. The Strait of Hormuz will be reopened only under Iranian arrangements, not through US threats,” Ghalibaf was quoted as saying by Press TV.

Earlier, Iranian media reported explosions on Abu Musa Island in the Persian Gulf, and in the Iranian cities of Iranshahr, Chabahar, Konarak, Sirik, Jask, and Bandar Abbas. In Bandar Abbas, according to the Mehr news agency, air defence forces fired at enemy targets in the skies above the city.

On Wednesday, US forces conducted a series of strikes on Iran. The US Central Command claimed the operation was carried out in response to Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the strait. President Donald Trump said the ceasefire was no longer valid.

Iran accused Washington of violating their memorandum of understanding and launched retaliatory strikes on US bases in Bahrain and Kuwait.

Explosions were heard in Bahrain amid the air raid alert, Al Mayadeen TV reported.

“The siren has been sounded. Citizens and residents are urged to remain calm and head to the nearest safe place,” the country’s Interior Ministry said in a statement on X.
