OGW held at Amarnath base camp in south Kashmir using facial recognition system

Date:

J&K Police on Saturday detained an alleged Over Ground Worker (OGW) with the help of the Facial Recognition System (FRS) at the Nunwan base camp of Amarnath Yatra in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Police said Mohammad Iqbal Wani of Hajin, Bandipora was detained after the FRS deployed by Anantnag Police generated a timely alert at the X-Ray Point, Nunwan base camp.

“Acting swiftly on the FRS alert, police personnel intercepted and verified the individual, during which he was confirmed to be an Over Ground Worker (OGW). The individual has been detained for further legal proceedings and investigation,” police said.

As part of the robust security arrangements for the ongoing Amarnath Yatra, the police has deployed FRS. On July 8, police arrested three alleged OGWs with the help of advanced surveillance FRS after it generated alerts about their movement in the Sarbal area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

“The successful interception highlights the effectiveness of advanced technology integrated into the multi-layered security grid established by Anantnag Police for the safe and secure conduct of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra. The deployment of the Facial Recognition System continues to strengthen real-time surveillance, enhance access control, and enable prompt response to potential security threats,” police said.

The annual Shri Amarnath Yatra crossed the two lakh pilgrim mark on Saturday, with more than 2 lakh devotees paying obeisance at the holy cave shrine within eight days of the pilgrimage. Officials said the yatra has been progressing smoothly along both the traditional Pahalgam route in Anantnag district and the shorter Baltal route in Ganderbal district.
