The Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Friday remained closed for the third consecutive day after a fresh landslide was triggered due to incessant rain across Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said that fresh landslide and shooting stones near Samroli in Udhampur district and other multiple locations at Ramban closed the 275-km Jammu-Srinagar national highway.
They said that the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) is closed for vehicular movement due to intermittent landslides and shooting stones at multiple locations caused by continuous rainfall.
“Commuters are advised to avoid travelling until the road is declared safe and clear for traffic, as there is an apprehension of further landslides and shooting stones,” they said.
Please don’t pay heed to the rumours and check the status of the road at traffic police social media handles and TCUs, they said.
However, flash floods triggered by a cloudburst struck the Barkuanda area of Bupp in Udhampur district during the early morning and affected several households.
The local administration acted promptly and, as a precautionary measure, shifted three affected families to the Government Middle School, Barkuanda.
No casualties have been reported, and further assessment of the damage is underway.
The Directorate School of Education has directed that no government or private educational institution, including coaching institutes and centres, in the flood-affected areas of Jammu Division shall resume physical classes unless their premises are declared structurally safe by the competent authority.
Meanwhile a Met official has forecast the current rain spell over South Kashmir and adjoining areas, Doda, Kishtwar and a few areas of Rajouri and Poonch districts is likely to intermittently continue till afternoon and gradual improvement thereafter.
He said that a spell of rain and thundershower scattered to many places with brief intense heavy showers in a few places of the Jammu Division, especially in early morning hours, while from July 28 to 31, there will be a fresh wet spell most likely in J&K with the possibility of heavy showers in the Jammu Division.
