Kashmiri Students Protest At AMU Campus Against Sedition Charges, Harassment

New Delhi: Kashmiri students studying at the Aligarh Muslim University organized a day-long sit-in protest in the campus on Tuesday against slapping of sedition charges on three students and alleged harassment by local authorities.

  On Saturday, sedition cases were registered against the three students for allegedly raising “anti-India” slogans and trying to hold a prayer meeting for scholar rebel Manan Bashir Wani, an aluminous of the varsity who was killed in an encounter with the government forces in north Kashmir, reports had said.

“Police filed an FIR against Wasim Malik, Abdul Mir, and one unnamed person. They have been identified on the basis of a video recording,” a news gatherer quoted Aligarh Senior Superintendent of Police Ajai Sahni as saying.

The protesting students said that if the sedition charges were not withdrawn, more than 1,200 Kashmiri students would leave the campus on October 17 after presenting their case during the alumni meet on October 16, as part of the Sir Syed Day celebration.

Earlier governor Malik spoke to Union Minister for Human Resource Development, Prakash Javadekar seeking his intervention to ensure smooth studies of the Kashmiri students at the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Governor also spoke to Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University, Prof Tariq Mansoor in this regard.

Malik urged Javadekar and Prof Tariq to ensure that the issue is resolved at the earliest and there is no disruption of studies of the Kashmiri students and they are allowed to continue their studies in a safe, secure and well-disposed academic environment.
