After Sonamarg slide, Police advise public to stay away from avalanche prone areas

A day after a massive avalanche struck the Sonamarg tourist resort in Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, police have advised the general public, tourists, and transporters to strictly avoid visiting or halting in avalanche-prone areas.

According to police, the avalanche occurred on Tuesday night at around 10:15 pm near the new truck yard in Sonamarg. The massive snow slide was captured on CCTV footage, which showed snow engulfing nearby buildings. Fortunately, the impact was minimal and no loss of life or property was reported.

A police team, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), rushed to the spot soon after the incident to assess the situation.

Ganderbal Police on Wednesday issued a fresh advisory urging people to avoid unnecessary movement in vulnerable zones. “The chances of avalanches remain very high, and unnecessary movement in avalanche-prone areas can pose serious risks,” police said.

They advised people to strictly follow official advisories, cooperate with local administration, and prioritize safety while travelling along the Sonamarg axis and adjoining areas.

The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has already issued an advisory asking people living in snow-bound higher reaches not to venture into sloppy and avalanche-prone areas.

Over the past week, Kashmir has witnessed two major spells of snowfall after a prolonged dry period. The latest snowfall, recorded on Tuesday, disrupted normal life across several parts of the Valley.
