Air India, other carriers reroute flights after Iran shuts airspace

Indian airline companies have cancelled several flights passing over Iran, while the routes of many others have been diverted.

Air India on Tuesday said it has rerouted several flights and cancelled some services due to the emerging security situation in Iran and the subsequent closure of the country’s airspace.

In a travel advisory issued on social media, the national carrier said flights overflying the region are now operating on alternative routes to ensure passenger safety. However, the airline cautioned that the rerouting may result in delays.

“Some Air India flights, where rerouting is not currently possible, are being cancelled,” the airline said.

Air India has advised passengers to check the status of their flights on its official website before proceeding to the airport. The airline expressed regret over the inconvenience caused, describing the disruption as unforeseen.

“Safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority,” the airline said.

Air India advised passengers to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport and expressed regret for the inconvenience caused. Sources said that three Air India flights bound for the United States have been cancelled, while other flights have been rerouted.

Private airline IndiGo also said on X that some of its international flights have been affected due to the “sudden closure of Iranian airspace.” Expressing regret, the airline stated that the situation is beyond its control.

Budget carrier SpiceJet also posted on X, saying that some of its flights may be affected.

The advisory comes amid heightened tensions in the region, which have disrupted civilian air traffic across parts of West Asia.

Meanwhile, Iran reopened its airspace after nearly five hours of closure, which had sparked concerns about potential military action by the US on Iran, forcing airlines to cancel, reroute, or delay some flights.

The temporary closure came as President Donald Trump has been weighing options to respond to the situation in Iran, which is seeing its biggest anti-government protests in years.
