The All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee (APSCC) has expressed concern that many young Sikh voters may be excluded from the voter list in Kashmir Valley due to a poorly conducted 2011 census.
The APSCC criticized the delimitation of assembly constituencies, saying it has divided Sikh voters and denied them representation.
These concerns were raised by a delegation of APSCC during their meeting with the officials of the Chief Electoral Office, Jammu & Kashmir. The delegation was led by APSCC Chairman, Jagmohan Singh Raina, a statement issued by the Sikh group said.
APSCC recently announced that it would contest from three assembly seats in Kashmir.
During the meeting APSCC Chairman proposed that the government should have involved the Sikh community in the census process to ensure accurate enumeration.
Raina warned that the exclusion of Sikh voters could lead to disenfranchisement and have disastrous consequences. He also alleged discrimination against the Sikh community, citing the lack of reservation and accountability.
The APSCC had planned to meet the Election Commission of India, but due to time constraints, the poll body directed the Chief Electoral Officer to address their concerns.
