The body of an oil tanker driver was retrieved from the river Jhelum after his vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the river in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district, officials said on Friday.
The deceased has been identified as Jitender Singh, a resident of Reasi in Jammu division, Police said.
They said an oil tanker on way from Srinagar towards Sumbal skidded off the road near Wangipora checkpost during the intervening night of Thursday and Friday and fell into river Jhelum after the driver lost control due to alleged rash driving and negligence.
The sleuths from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and Police launched a massive search operation and retrieved the body of the driver of the ill-fated oil tanker from the river. The oil tanker has also been taken out from the river.
However, it was not clear whether the oil of the tanker spilled into the river Jhelum also.
