Captain's knock by Iyer powers PBKS to six-wicket win over SRH in run fest

Skipper Shreyas Iyer produced a captain’s knock under pressure, smashing an unbeaten 69 studded with towering sixes and crisp boundaries, to steer Punjab Kings (PBKS) to a thrilling six-wicket win over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a high-scoring IPL 2026 clash here on Saturday.

Chasing a daunting 220, Iyer turned the contest decisively in the middle overs with a calculated assault.

Bringing up his half-century in style with a six over long-on, he shifted gears seamlessly, dispatching bowlers to all parts of the ground. His innings featured a flurry of boundaries — including a ferocious pull over deep square-leg off Harshal Patel and a clean lofted drive over extra cover — that kept PBKS firmly ahead in the chase.

With the equation tightening briefly after Nehal Wadhera’s dismissal in the 17th over, Iyer held his nerve.

He found an able finisher in Shashank Singh, who provided the final flourish — including a towering six off Jaydev Unadkat before sealing the match with a boundary in the 19th over, sparking celebrations in the PBKS camp.

Earlier, the chase had been set up by a blistering start from Priyansh Arya (57 off 20) and Prabhsimran Singh (51 off 25), who tore into the SRH attack from the outset. Arya raced to a 16-ball fifty with audacious strokeplay, while Prabhsimran complemented him with powerful hitting as PBKS surged to 93 in the powerplay. Their 99-run opening stand laid the perfect platform for the chase.

Among other contributors, Nehal Wadhera chipped in with 14, while Shashank Singh’s unbeaten 16 ensured there were no late hiccups. For SRH, Shivang Kumar stood out with the ball, claiming three crucial wickets to briefly pull his side back into the contest.

Earlier in the day, SRH posted an imposing 219 for six, powered by Abhishek Sharma’s explosive 74 off 28 balls, laced with eight sixes, and a brisk 38 from Travis Head as the duo stitched a 120-run opening partnership. Heinrich Klaasen added a valuable 39 in the middle overs, while Aniket Verma’s late cameo provided further impetus.

For PBKS, Shashank Singh impressed with the ball as well, picking up two key wickets for just 20 runs, while Arshdeep Singh also claimed two scalps to contain the scoring in the death overs.

Despite the stiff target, Iyer’s commanding presence and clean hitting, backed by strong contributions across departments, ensured PBKS chased it down in 18.5 overs, underlining his growing reputation as a finisher and leader in crunch situations.
