Klaasen anchors as SRH post 226/8 against KKR

Heinrich Klaasen emerged as the pivot around which Sunrisers Hyderabad’s explosive innings revolved, guiding them to a commanding 226 for 8 against Kolkata Knight Riders in their Indian Premier League 2026 clash at Eden Gardens here on Thursday.

In an innings that began with sheer aggression and threatened to unravel midway, Klaasen’s measured half-century turned out to be the defining factor that held Hyderabad together and powered them to a daunting total.

The early momentum was provided by Travis Head (46 off 21) and Abhishek Sharma (48 off 21), who tore into the Kolkata attack with an 82-run opening stand inside six overs. However, the game shifted when Kolkata struck back with quick wickets, including that of skipper Ishan Kishan, leaving Hyderabad at 112 for 3.

With momentum slipping, Klaasen stepped in to anchor the innings. Displaying composure under pressure, he rebuilt the innings with Nitish Kumar Reddy (39), stitching together a crucial partnership that steadied the ship after the middle-order wobble.

Klaasen accelerated at the right time, bringing up his half-century in the death overs and targeting gaps with precision. His ability to rotate strike and pick boundaries ensured Hyderabad did not lose direction despite wickets falling at the other end.

The final overs produced high drama as Kolkata attempted a comeback. Vaibhav Arora struck twice in the 18th over, while Blessing Muzarabani turned the final over into a spectacle, dismissing Klaasen and later claiming his fourth wicket by removing Shivang Kumar on the last ball, caught by Ajinkya Rahane.

Yet, despite the late breakthroughs, the damage had been done. Klaasen’s 52 off 35 balls had already ensured Hyderabad crossed the 220-mark, with late cameos adding the finishing touches.

While the opening blitz grabbed attention, it was Klaasen’s calm amid chaos that defined the innings, transforming a good total into a match-defining one and firmly placing Hyderabad in control.

Brief scores:
SRH 226/8 (20), Heinrich Klaasen 52 (35), Abhishek Sharma 48 (21), Travis Head 46 (21), Nitish Kumar Reddy 39 (24); Blessing Muzarabani 4/41, Vaibhav Arora 2/47.
