The authorities in Srinagar have asked all the shopkeepers and other business establishments to install CCTV cameras. The order has been passed by the authorities in the wake of surging attacks by militants.
In the busy locations where the attacks take place, the security agencies find it difficult to locate the culprit. There are not enough CCTV cameras installed by the government even in the city. The fresh move is aimed to enhance the security surveillance in the city and thwart militant attacks in future.
The businessmen are not amused and have been expressing their reservations. Though all the shopkeepers agree that installing cameras will in a long way help them from thefts and other issues besides the security surveillance, the bigger question is of the investment it requires.
The small businessmen show their helplessness in coughing up such costs to install the CCTV. They have genuine reasons for three bleak business seasons. It doesn’t require only the CCTV cameras but a proper backup that will enable the functioning of cameras for 24 hours.
So arranging the funds for the purpose certainly may dent the small businessmen. It is difficult for them to arrange on a very short notice when there has been no normal business since 2019. Medium to potential business class have no issues in lacing up their establishments with CCTVs. But for the small business units the fraternity urges the government to help them financially. They also seek more time and at least upto Eid.
Since there is a genuine issue from the trade body the government also needs to show leniency. If it is not possible for the authorities to fund the installation of CCTV at small shops but at least they can provide an adequate breathing space for the community.
Enhancing the vigilance through all possible modes in the city is a welcome step. But the authorities must carry along with the community which is mutually beneficial.
