Centre ignoring Assam floods: Congress

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday accused the Central government of giving a “step-motherly” treatment to Assam when the state is severely hit by floods and accused the ruling BJP of ignoring the suffering of the people.
“It is unfortunate that there is an ‘irresponsible’ government at the Centre. There are floods in Assam and Meghalaya but the ruling BJP in its lust of power has become blind to the pain of the people of the northeast suffering from floods,” Gogoi, who is also the Congress Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, said.
Referring to the previous Congress-led UPA governments at the Centre, the MP said: “In the past whenever there had been floods, a responsible Central government used to send a team of Ministers. The Prime Minister visited himself and studied and assessed the situation.
“People in Silchar do not have access to drinking water. The situation is so critical. Never before have we seen a time when people do not have even access to drinking water.”
Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the MP said: “The PM is either busy campaigning in Gujarat or trying to ‘destabilise’ the Maharashtra government. This is brutal and insensitive.”
Gogoi asked Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma if had asked for any financial package to alleviate the damages caused by the floods.
Several districts in Assam are affected by the floods caused due to incessant rainfall.
On Maharashtra crisis, Gogoi said: ”It is their (Shiv Sena’s) internal matter. We are with Uddhav Thackeray. I am hopeful that the BJP will fail in its attempt (to seize power).”
