Close strategic cooperation: Qatar, US discuss defense, energy security

Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani met with US Vice President JD Vance and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent in Washington on Thursday and discussed ways on reinforcing defense cooperation and addressing shifts in global energy markets.


The meeting was held in the wake of rapidly changing situation in West Asia due to the disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.


The officials discussed developments in global energy markets, underscoring the importance of sustainable energy supplies.


The discussions covered developments in “global energy markets, with both sides underscoring the importance of ensuring the sustainability of energy supplies and maintaining the continued flow of liquefied natural gas from the State of Qatar to global markets, thereby supporting global energy security,” the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said .


Both sides emphasised maintaining the uninterrupted flow of Qatari liquefied natural gas (LNG) to global markets to bolster energy security.


“The meeting discussed the close strategic cooperation between the State of Qatar and the United States and explored ways to further strengthen it across various fields, particularly in the area of defense partnership in light of current regional developments, in a manner that serves the shared interests of the two countries,” the Foreign Ministry of Qatar. said in a statement.


Leaders explored ways to enhance strategic coordination amid evolving regional dynamics and mounting energy concerns.


The meeting highlighted “close strategic cooperation” between the U.S. and Qatar, particularly in defense, serving the shared interests of both nations.


Sheikh Mohammed stressed the need to “safeguard energy security and ensure freedom of navigation at sea in line with international law.”


Vice President Vance praised the strong strategic partnership, commending Qatar’s contributions to regional stability and global energy security.
