EU reaffirms commitment to Middle East stability, calls for full reopening of Strait of Hormuz

European Council President António Costa held talks with Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Monday, reaffirming the European Union’s commitment to stability in West Asia and emphasizing support for the full and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz as a priority.

Costa said EU leaders will engage with international partners on the evolving situation in West Asia during an informal meeting in Cyprus later this week.

He stressed that “peace and stability in the Middle East are a priority” for the European Union, adding that the EU remains ready to work closely with key regional partners such as Jordan. “In that spirit, it is always a pleasure to count on the wisdom of King Abdullah II,” he said.

Following their call, Costa reiterated that the EU stands by its partners in these challenging times and supports ongoing diplomatic efforts.

He also underlined that the full and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz remains a key priority.

“We remain gravely concerned by the situation in Lebanon,” Costa said, stressing that the disarmament of Hezbollah is essential for any peace initiative to succeed. “The EU will continue to support the authorities to disarm Hezbollah, as the only way to restore Lebanon’s stability. We stand ready to support the country with humanitarian aid and reconstruction.”

Costa added that the situations in Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, also remain “high on the EU’s agenda.”

Earlier, Costa also expressed criticism of the new US security strategy, particularly its remarks concerning freedom of speech in Europe.

”Since the beginning of this conflict, the European union has been consistent in calling for de-escalation and negotiations in full respect of international law. All parties must use the momentum created by the recent US-Iran ceasefire brokered by Pakistan to address the concerns of the international community regarding Iran,” Costa has said.

He has stressed during his meeting with leaders of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar that restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is crucial and urgent, and Europe is committed to helping guarantee the safe and unimpeded passage of ships.
