New Delhi, July 14 (UNI) The Congress on Thursday said it is contemplating on preponing its ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in view of the present situation in the country.
The grand old party had announced the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from October 2 during the ‘Chintan Shivir’ in Rajasthan’s Udaipur in May, in a bid to strengthen the bonds of social harmony, preserve the foundational values of the Constitution which the party claimed are under ‘attack’ in the BJP-led government at the Centre, besides highlighting the issues like inflation and unemployment.
“We may start the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ before October 2, in view of the repeated and intensifying attacks on our democracy, Constitution, institutions and the social fabric of our society by the Modi government and BJP. We are exploring the possibility,” Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said at a press conference at the party headquarters here, after a meeting was held on the planning of the Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.
Attacking the ruling BJP, the Congress MP further said, “On the basis of language, religion, food and caste, the ‘divisive’ policies we are seeing, is BJP’s ‘Bharat Todo Abhiyaan’ and Congress will fight against it with Bharat Jodo Yatra.”
The Yatra will cover a distance of around 3,500 km and pass through 12 States and 2 Union Territories, he said.
“The entire leadership and cadre of the Congress party will participate in the Yatra. Many other yatras will join the main padayatra from across the length and breadth of the country. The specific details of the Yatra’s route will be announced very soon,” the senior Congress leader said.
Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, who was also present, appealed to like-minded political parties, civil society groups, business and professional associations to join the Bharat Jodo Yatra.
