Srinagar,(UNI): On the eve of World Environmental Day, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir celebrated environment week at Benihama campus on Monday.
The programme aimed at wider participation of students and local residents representatives from nearby areas.
The Faculty of Forestry, Benihama campus of the SKUAST kick-started Environmental Week on the eve of World Environmental Day.
Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-K, Prof Nazir Ahmad Ganai during the event said that there is a need to have mass awareness of changing climate regime due to human interventions and negligence.
Dean Faculty of Forestry, Prof S A Gangoo, gave a brief account of this historical day celebrated with the theme “Only One Earth” for the year 2022.
He also talked about the importance of small steps that could result in a comprehensive reduction in pollution of the environment.
Dr Irfan Khursheed, Assistant Professor, Amar Singh College deliberated upon the risk of environmental programs from a historical perspective. He further talked about transformative action that can be taken to tackle climate change.
A painting competition was also held in which more than 100 entries were received from the students of the faculty and nearby schools.
The entire week is studded with different activities including drawings, painting, photography, videography, essay writing, poem reciting, an environmental awareness program and a cleanliness drive.
Additionally, the participants will be exposed to the Environmental Park at Kangan and Sagg Eco Village.
The local schools that participated in the event include Shaheen Public School Manigam, Hanfia Islamia Model School Benhama, Evergreen High School Nunar Ganderbal, Govt Middle School Watlar, Public High School Watlar, Govt Middle School Benhama.
