Funeral of Iran's late Supreme leader Ali Khamenei to begin July 4, burial set for July 9

Funeral ceremonies for Iran’s late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will begin in Tehran on July 4 and conclude with his burial at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on July 9, according to a schedule released Saturday by the office responsible for preserving and publishing his works.

Khamenei was killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes on Tehran on February 28, an event that marked the end of more than three decades of leadership over the Islamic Republic.

According to the announcement, farewell ceremonies will be held at Tehran’s Imam Khomeini Mosalla on July 4 and 5. A funeral procession is scheduled in the Iranian capital on July 6, followed by another procession in the holy city of Qom on July 7.

The final funeral ceremony will take place in the northeastern city of Mashhad on July 9, where Khamenei will be laid to rest at the revered Imam Reza Shrine, Press TV reported.

The date coincides with the eve of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Sajjad. Organizers called on Iranians, Muslims, and supporters of Iran from around the world to participate in the ceremonies, describing them as a national farewell to the longtime leader.

In a statement, officials thanked government institutions and public organizations for their preparations, while emphasizing that ordinary citizens would play the central role in the commemorations.

They said the events are expected to witness unprecedented public participation. Further details regarding the ceremonies are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Khamenei was killed during the opening hours of the conflict that erupted on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran. The attacks also killed several senior Iranian military commanders.

Days later, Iran’s Assembly of Experts elected Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of Ali Khamenei, as the country’s new Supreme Leader. The funeral ceremonies are expected to draw millions of mourners and delegations from across the region, marking one of the most significant events in Iran’s modern political and religious history.
