The Supreme Court on Friday rejected a plea filed by Zakia Jafri, the widow of Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, who was killed during the violence in Ahmedabad, challenging the SIT’s clean chit to then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others in 2002 Gujarat riots.

A three-judge bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice A M Khanwilkar, passed the judgement.

“We uphold the decision of magistrate in accepting the SIT report and the decision to reject protest petition. This appeal is devoid of merits and dismissed accordingly,” the Apex Court said in its judgement.

The three-judge bench also comprising Justices C T Ravikumar and Dinesh Maheshwari on December 9 last year had reserved its judgement on the appeal after hearing a detailed argument from Zakia, Special Investigation Team and others in the matter.

Zakia Ahsan Jafri had moved the Supreme Court challenging the SIT’s clean chit to then Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in the 2002 Gujarat riots cases.

The Congress MP Ehshan Jafri was killed in the infamous Gulbarg Society violence during the Gujarat riots in 2002.

The plea before the top court had challenged the Gujarat High Court’s decision of 2017. The High Court had upheld the decision of the Magistrate to accept the closure report filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the case and had thus dismissed the petition filed by Jafri challenging the report.
