India fast bowler Harshit Rana praised Shubman Gill’s leadership, highlighting the clarity and composure the young captain brings to decision-making on the field.
Speaking at the post-match press conference after the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara on Sunday, Rana described Gill as a captain who backs his instincts and gives players freedom.
He said, “Gill remains calm under pressure and does not overthink once a decision has been made.”
Rana added that Gill’s approach of empowering teammates is one of his standout qualities as a leader, noting that allowing players the freedom to express themselves on the field helps bring out their best performances.
The 22-year-old Rana also played a key all-round role in India’s four-wicket win. With the ball, he picked up two crucial wickets, dismissing New Zealand openers Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls. He then contributed with the bat, scoring 29 runs off 23 balls, including two fours and a six, helping ease the pressure during the chase.
Rana said, “The team management is keen to develop him as an all-rounder, with a focus on batting at No. 8 as an all-rounder.”
He added that he is working on his batting in the nets and aims to contribute 30 to 40 runs whenever required by the team.
India chased down a target of 301 in the second last over of the match. The hosts briefly lost momentum after Virat Kohli was dismissed for 93, but KL Rahul’s unbeaten 29 off 21 balls, supported by Washington Sundar, guided India to a four-wicket victory.
