Kupwara Oct 14: The Bar association Kupwara on Wednesday went on continues strike against the Deputy Commissioner, Rajeev Ranjan for allegedly beating a senior citizen who is also physically handicapped.

The Bar association president, GM Shah told The Legitimate that the Deputy Commissioner not only abused the physically handicapped person and asked his guards to beat him, he also lodged a case against the lawyer and relative of victim who tried to interfere into the matter.

However, Ranjan rubbished the claims and said that a group of people stormed into his office and sought the renewal of gun license which had adverse CID report.

“A physically challenged person approached me in my office along with some people and sought the renewal of gun license. As the person was physically unfit, the CID had given adverse report in his favour,” he told The Legitimate.

The Deputy Commissioner further said that as he refused to renew the license on the report of CID, they started shouting on him and pushed the table that struck to his belly.

“I lost the balance physically and immediately asked my guards to take him out of office. I also wrote to SSP to seize his arms immediately and submit the report to him,” he said.

However, Shah said that the DC is highly arrogant and he is often misbehaving with the common people.

“He often disgraces people who approach him with their grievances. Despite receiving complaints, we were ignoring but he crossed all limits on Tuesday when he dragged a physically handicapped person and lodged FIR against our lawyer who tried to interfere,” he said.

He threatened to continue the strike till the DC is not transferred from Kupwara.

“How can he act rude and misbehave with people when he is a public servant. We can’t tolerate it,” he said.

“We cannot compromise over Human Rights values especially of senior citizens.” said Abdul Majeed, another advocate.  He also said that most of people in Kupwara are disappointed with an arrogant attitude of the DC.

Rajeev, however, said that if lawyers have decided to take this extreme step and support the person who was trying to take law on ride, he will write a letter to Chief Justice of state and sought his intervention.

“The Lawyers are bound to obey the law and not encourage lawlessness. I have followed the rules and refused to renew his license, although it was renewed in past,” he said.
