Raising concerns over the situation in Myanmar, Ministry of External Affairs on Friday said that the security situation in Myanmar remains precarious and deteriorating.

Addressing a weekly press conference, Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “In view of the arising situation We’ve also relocated our staff from the Sittwe consulate to Yangon”.

“You heard about the fighting that is going on, specifically in Rakhine state and other areas. Some time back, we issued an advisory for our nationals so that they could take due care” he added.

Regarding the Indians who are travelling to Myanmar, the MEA spokesperson said, “They should observe proper safety protocols and take care of themselves while the embassy is there to take care of them”.

When asked about the deaths of Indian students in the US, Randhir Jaiswal said , “Very unfortunate deaths of Indian students, two of them passed away. While the death of both of our students is under investigation”.

“The consulate has reached out and they have extended all possible help. Such cases have been appropriately taken up with the US authorities to seek justice,” he added.

“Our consulates and mission in the US, they have strengthened our student outreach that they convey to the students how they can take care of themselves and what should be done,” he said in response to a question on the safety of Indian students.

This comes as 10 Indian students have died in 2024 alone including, 25-year-old Mohammed Abdul Arfath, who was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio on Tuesday.

“Several of these deaths have not happened because of one reason. They are multicausal in nature…

There are some community issues also… We also have a large Indian student community, upwards of 300,000 in the United States” Randhir Jaiswal said.
