A full emergency was declared on Saturday morning at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport after an IndiGo flight traveling from Visakhapatnam to the capital reported an engine failure mid-air.
According to the preliminary reports of the incident, IndiGo flight 6E 579, a Boeing 737-800 carrying 161 people, experienced an issue with one of its engines during the journey. A full emergency was declared at 10:39 am as the aircraft neared Delhi.
The aircraft had ample fuel on board, with an estimated endurance of more than six hours, and was directed to land on Runway 28. It landed safely at 10:54 am.
Airport sources stated that all standard emergency procedures were put into action, with rescue and firefighting teams deployed on standby as a precaution. No hazardous materials were reported to be on board.
In a statement, an IndiGo spokesperson said that a technical issue was identified shortly before landing on flight 6E 579, which was operating from Visakhapatnam to Delhi on March 28.
“As a precaution and in line with standard operating procedures, the pilots requested priority landing, and the aircraft landed safely at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi,” the statement read further.
The official added that all relevant authorities were promptly notified, and the aircraft is currently undergoing required inspections and maintenance. At IndiGo, the safety of passengers and crew remains the highest priority.
After landing, passengers were assisted by airline staff along with the Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) terminal operations team, and no injuries were reported.
The incident occurs at a time of increased attention on aviation safety, with regulators closely scrutinizing operational procedures and in-flight emergencies.
