NIA raids Siraj-ul-Uloom seminary in south Kashmir

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday conducted raids at multiple locations across the twin districts of Srinagar and Shopian, including the Darul Uloom Siraj-ul-Uloom seminary, which was declared an unlawful association by the Jammu and Kashmir administration last month.

Officials said NIA teams carried out searches during the early hours at the seminary in the Imam Sahib area of Shopian.

Last month, the Jammu and Kashmir administration declared Siraj-ul-Uloom — one of the largest seminaries in south Kashmir — an unlawful entity under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), alleging “covert linkages” with the banned Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), besides “serious legal, administrative and financial irregularities” and fostering “an environment conducive to radicalisation”.

The seminary became the first religious educational institution in Jammu and Kashmir to be declared unlawful under the UAPA.

Officials said the NIA also carried out searches at a location in Srinagar, though details of the operation and the case linked to the raids were not immediately disclosed.

There was no official statement from the NIA regarding the searches till the filing of this report.
