Iran to unveil shipping control mechanism in Strait of Hormuz: Lawmaker

Iran has announced that it will soon unveil a new mechanism to regulate maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a senior lawmaker, amid ongoing regional tensions and disputes over maritime security.

“Iran, within the framework of its national sovereignty and the guarantee of international trade security, has prepared a professional mechanism to manage traffic in the Strait of Hormuz along a designated route, which will be unveiled soon,” he head of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Ebrahim Azizi, wrote on X.

Under the new mechanism, only commercial vessels and parties cooperating with Iran will be permitted to transit the Strait of Hormuz, he said. Tehran will impose fees for the special services provided under the scheme.

The strait will remain closed to participants of the “so-called freedom project,” Azizi said.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iranian territory. Washington and Tehran announced a ceasefire on April 7, but the US imposed a blockade on Iranian ports, while Iran announced special transit rules for passage through the Strait of Hormuz.
